Acceptable Risk LA is a Los Angeles-based artist collective established by former members of the FORUM mentorship program at the Torrance Art Museum. ARLA’s projects thus far have been nomadic, spread throughout LA and mirroring the sprawl of the city, but ARLA plans to eventually establish a centralized space while continuing to produce pop-up events.

A trans is a conceptual laboratory for creative people and a platform for communication about contemporary art, architecture, urbanism and related culture with the focus on the city, space and architecture. With determination in the search for allies and like minded individuals, architect and curator Isolde Nagel designes a program for those who value artistic architectonic visions and attentiveness to social questions.

Studio Baustelle is an artist-run space for art, events and experiments in Neukölln, Berlin highlighting analogue and accessible media.

Alraune
Molly Jo Shea, an artist and performer living in Los Angeles, is creating a body of work surrounding the terrifying folklore of the Mandrake Root for her show at Horse and Pony. Deemed the first genetic engineering horror story, the mandrake (or Alraune), history is more relevant now than ever, since news that the first human children have been CRISPR edited. In an immersive performance, Molly will be using special effects makeup to transform into the role of the witch-like creature who creates the Alraune, performed by Carrie McIlwain. Also traveling with her to Berlin will be her brood of root-like ceramics to be unearthed, feared, and smoked from.

Adjunct Positions is an artist-run project space, founded in 2014, devoted to open and supportive critical-conceptual dialogue. An artist-centric test site, the gallery supports work that brings creative process into the exhibition space — transforming, performing, or otherwise inhabiting it. The noncommercial gallery is located in a residential garage in Highland Park.

Horse & Pony Founded by artists Carrick Bell and Rocco Ruglio-Misurell in 2013, Horse & Pony is an artist-run space with the aim of providing artists, curators, and other project spaces the opportunity to extend or act outside of their existing practices.

COPYRIGHTberlin is an ongoing artists’ project and magazine that was founded in 1999 by Berlin based artists Patrick Huber and Ute Lindner and serves as a non-commercial platform for current artistic positions and strategies. Furthermore, COPYRIGHT acts as a publisher of the magazine COPYRIGHT which is published irregularly. Since 1999 eight issues have been published, the last three ones dealing with the issue of Spaces/Non Spaces, Presence/Absence and Ethics/Aesthetics. COPYRIGHT is now planninig its ninth project about space and identity: “© No. 9 im-raum-stehen.”

Parallels to a Fictional Universe is a group show with artists Katie Kirk, Andrew Holmquist, Aubrey Ingmar Manson, Daniel A. McKee, Garry Noland, Lydia Maria Pfeffer, Matthew Sweesy, Keith Tolch, and Tessie Salcido Whitmore.

There is the question, what kind of universe do we exist in, and what kind of parallel universes are possible? The artists selected instinctually expand upon this notion in their practices and explore their individual worlds. Lydia Maria Pfeffer takes from folklore, myths, and stories and makes up an imagined cosmos where her shapeshifters and hybrids live. Keith Tolch paints a universe that include bits and components reminiscent of video games and internet culture to examine a digitized brainscape. Matthew Sweesy populates his painting worlds with childlike imagery that is used as a tool to meditate through the fears and anxieties of adulthood.Katie Kirk explores a colorful and abstract macrocosm that is both gestural and aware, balancing between the parts and the whole. Garry Noland uses unusual materials to build fictional landscapes that undulate between sculpture and painting. Overall, the artwork in this show provides a cerebral treasure trove, each world described is a glimpse that viewers can take home and expand upon on.

Dalton Warehouse is a collaborative 3,400 sf studio and exhibition space located in South Central LA, and run by artists: Katie Kirk, Aubrey Ingmar Manson, Lydia Maria Pfeffer, Daniel Schubert and Keith Tolch. We believe in engaging and expanding a growing art community open to thought and provocation through a democratic system developed in our own sphere.

L’oiseau présente is a non-commercial project run by the artists Gunna Schmidt, Nicola Stäglich and Anke Völk, whose artistic focus is on abstraction in a cross-genre painting. They understand the conception and realization of exhibitions as part of their artistic attitude. Thus, a continued exhibition series with already 24 exhibitions emerged. These took place mainly in Berlin in Ballhaus Ost on the 3rd floor since 2010, but also outside Berlin, for example: "Berlin Non Objective" 2012 (SNO Contemporay Art Project in Sydney), "be abstract" 2015 (Kunstverein Schwäbisch Hall), "between things" 2016 (Einraumhaus c/o, Mannheim) Currently, since 2016, we are without fixed space.

Die Botschaft is a project space for socio-political discourse and contemporary art. Started 10 years ago as a nomadic exhibition project by the artists Manfred Peckl, Rainer Neumaier and Thomas Draschan, it settled at the Uferhallen in Wedding in 2016. Directly located in an increasingly gentrified area, Die Botschaft is an art hub, political message and space for discussion at the same time.

During B-LA CONNECT the Berlin based project space Axel Obiger is cooperating with Durden and Ray, one of the most renowned project spaces in LA. Both spaces have existed for 10 years now and both are focusing on the artistic exchange between contemporary art positions on an international level.

The exhibition ALMOST SPARKLING – curated exclusively for B-LA CONNECT – brings together artistic positions from both spaces and focuses on the city of LA, glittering, full of gold dust and glamorous. Thus, as a place and surface of own projections and clichés…

Durden and Ray founded in 2009, is comprised of 25 artist/curators who create exhibition opportunities at their downtown Los Angeles gallery as well as work with artist groups and galleries around the world to develop international exchanges as a commitment to global artistic research, interaction, and alternative networks.

Axel Obiger The gallery presents yearly 12 exhibitions, about 10 duo exhibitions as well as 2 group shows with current works, guest artists and an accompanying program of performances, lectures, and artist talks.

MICROLOGIES is a group exhibition that revolves around the aesthetics of small-scale, micro materiality poetics and minimum gesture politics experimenting with scale as a radical instigator of awareness in our relationship to the world around us. The eclectic group of contemporary artists in this exhibition have been invited to take the challenge of creating a very small but nevertheless significant piece, which is no bigger than 2 1/4" (5.7 cm) on each side.This exhibition proposes to open up a space to explore the potential of minimum events and the implications of small gestures in relation to macro events and paradigms evaluating the possibilities for philosophical discernment that unfolds when we put in dialogue the “intimate, self-reflexive and profound” in juxtaposition to the grandiose, spectacular and universal”.

DXIX is an artist run project house in Venice, CA that seeks to contribute to the thriving diversity of the art context in Los Angeles. Scharaun is an interdisciplinary project space for art and architecture in Berlin Siemensstadt since 2017.
The exhibition space is located in an apartment complex from the 1930s, which was built by the architect Hans Scharoun for the workers of the nearby Siemens factories. Scharoun himself has lived and worked from 1930 to 1960 in an apartment inside the same building.
SCHARAUN was founded by the visual artist Jaro Straub, who is also the artistic director.

The New Colossus
features artists from Los Angeles and Berlin who identify as immigrants. Organized by Eastside International (Los Angeles) and SCOTTY (Berlin).

Eastside International (ESXLA) is an artist-run contemporary visual art kunsthalle and international artist residency based in Los Angeles, California, directed by artist Jason Ramos. Founded in 2014 by Ramos and artists Michelle Carla Handel and Molly Shea, Eastside International’s artist in residence program hosts up to five visual artists to live, work, and immerse themselves in the Los Angeles art community. ESXLA’s parallel exhibition program features the work of local, national, and international emerging and established artists in a non-commercial, alternative venue.

SCOTTY was founded in 2006. Today, the artist-run project space is located in Kreuzberg, Oranienstrasse and organized by 13 artists. In the house with the smallest floor space in Kreuzberg Scotty provides an open platform for its member artists and curators as well as for guests, offering the greatest possible freedom while exploiting group potential to a maximum. Intermedia and interdisciplinary solo and group exhibitions are shown at regular intervals, and performances and film evenings are organized. The focus is on contemporary social and cultural-political issues. SCOTTY operates independent of the market – it is selfautonomy determined and non-hierarchical.

The Metanatural Landscapes exhibition is not about nature or the landscape per se. Instead, this exhibition showcases divergent works with overt references to nature in an attempt to examine the filtered perception of nature rather than nature itself. Examples include a series of moving images of Icelandic sea and landscapes shot on grainy 16mm film transferred to an intentionally glitchy video ( Méndez), photographs of large scale color photographs of beaches situated within the context of a real tourist beach destination (Bartholl), a sound installation of leaves (Iona Vreme Moser) or a cartoon-like owl sculpture perched on a tree branch constructed with the help of a CDC printer (Vrymoed). This exhibition will hopefully serve as an opportunity for visitors to contemplate and reflect upon how human awareness of nature and the landscape has been affected by the media, entertainment, and the internet, especially for the city dweller.

JAUS Opening its doors in September of 2009, JAUS continues its mission towards delivering curatorial projects, by both in-house and outside curators, with an ample range of themes, genres, and media by artists from around the world in diverse stages of their careers.
From 2014, JAUS has focused primarily on solo and two-person exhibitions.

panke.gallery Founded in 2016, panke.gallery seeks to open up a local and international dialogue between established and emerging artists. The presented works derive from the connection between digital or net-based art and club culture, reflecting in particular the recent history of Berlin.

LAVA Projects is an artist run project space created to help bring cutting edge contemporary art to the Los Angeles community.

Wolf & Galentz The gallery focuses on the presentation of 20th century artists from East and West Berlin, as well as 21st century visual art. In contrasting and juxtaposing them, current and historic aesthetic positions become discernible. The gallery also will strive to facilitate international art exchange programmes. The gallerists both maintain contacts with artists in Berlin (project space organisation Kolonie Wedding) and internationally, such as from Finland, Croatia, Macedonia, USA, Russia and the Caucasus.

_mandujano/cell comprises two parts. cell is a project space organized by Juan Capistran. cell seeks to infect by organizing projects and exhibitions with artists locally, nationally and internationally. mandujano is a book shop curated by Hazel Mandujano that specializes in low edition and multiples, rare books and objects produced by artists and small publishers.

nationalmuseum is a project space in Kreuzberg, founded in 2008. The programme comprises exhibitions, screenings and performances. Each show aims for a clearly defined visual statement, and as a consequence nationalmuseum mainly shows solo and two-person exhibitions.

Between the 11th of March and the 3rd of April 2019, members of the MADLAB studio travelled to Los Angeles to participate in CO/LAB IV: LA-Rotterdam, an international project presenting 8 artist collectives from Los Angeles partnering with 8 artist collectives from Rotterdam. The MADLAB studio was paired up with Monte Vista Projects.
Together, we created a site-specific call-and-response project, making works in Los Angeles in response to each other and our environment. In addition to this physical creative process every day one of us Skyped with Roland, who was still in Rotterdam at the time. During these conversations we talked about the process from a professional as well as a personal point of view. These dialogues were recorded and edited into a documentary.
The documentary mentioned above will be presented in Kronenboden, alongside the outcome of a new call-and-response project between members of the MADLAB studio and Monte Vista Projects.

Monte Vista Projects is a Los Angeles based artist-run collective established in 2007. Through exhibitions, lectures, events, and performances, MVP serves as a place to share ideas and cultivate exhibitions that question existing artistic frameworks. Monte Vista Projects collaborates with local, national, and international artist-run spaces. We prioritize working with under-represented artists to broaden access to artistic discourse.

kronenboden Named after the German theater term for the attic above the audience, the project space is run by the pinhole and theatre photographer Karen Stuke and focuses primarily on the intersections between visual and performing arts. Besides regular exhibitions featuring photography, painting, sculpture and installations, Kronenboden also hosts readings, classical concerts with leading international musicians and similar events.

Nothing Special Berlin is curated by Frank Stockton and will feature the work of Mark Flores, Julienne Fusello, William E. Jones, Frank Stockton, Willa Wasserman and Anthony Miserendino.

Nothing Special is the name of an artist-run series of exhibitions in an 11 by 11 foot room on the second floor of an art studio in the West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles. Exhibitions revolve around simple themes that make a virtue of the gallery’s limitations, featuring projects that either expand upon or exist in parallel to the participants’ usual artistic practice. Nothing Special’s mission is to promote the work of artists and to spark creative dialogues between members of Los Angeles’s art community. Each Nothing Special show will be numbered in sequence for the duration of the series, and will include a limited edition 'zine intended to broaden the scope and reach of the conversation.

Believing that artistic merit should not be determined by commercial viability, Nothing Special works outside the mainstream gallery system in Los Angeles and encourages accessibility via an engaged social media presence.

SomoS is an artist/curator-run gallery and artist residency space whose mission is to create an international open framework for innovative arts and creative cooperation. SomoS finds meaning in a pragmatic and innovative hybrid of art-presentation, production, education and reflection that engages with, and celebrates an ever-changing community; living and working together in a multi-generational, multicultural setting.

ODD ARK•LA , founded in 2018, is an artist-run space located in Highland Park, Los Angeles, California. A platform for contemporary art, exhibitions, performance, special projects and sound works. Cashmere Radio is a not-for-profit community experimental radio station based in Lichtenberg, Berlin. The ambition of the station is to preserve and further radio and broadcasting practices by playing with the plasticity and malleability of the medium. We do this by both honouring and challenging its inherent qualities: it is both a physical station open to the public and an online radio; it has regular shows, yet opens itself up to extended and one-off events; it features extended generative music performances and installations at the same time as working within radio’s typical durations. In short, it is an attempt to enhance and celebrate the performative, social and informative power of radio that we believe lies within the form itself.

Changing Room / Wedding: is a new project space focusing on sound art and performance. The programming consists of interdisciplinary projects based on sound art, speech/voice, and movement and offers talks, performances, and deep listening sessions on a regular basis. CHANGING ROOM is situated in a former horse stable on Lüderitzstraße in Berlin Wedding’s African Quarter, which will soon be renamed to Cornelius-Frederiks-Straße.

The title of the exhibition series is related to the idea that a former gallery space will act as a temporary artist-run space, testing its own boundaries and approaching, in a playful way, the arguable assumption that a project space will never be a perfect white cube.

PØST is a subversive project. It is an experimental system suggesting that existing support systems are lacking, and there's need for a flexible venue for exhibition. It proposes a resistance toward fixed ideas, arguing a system is always in need of reconsideration, reinvention, and growth. An organic support system, its strategies continue to shift in an introspective manner.

LAGEEGAL Founded in 2010, LAGE EGAL still regards itself as an experimental Berlin-based laboratory intent on tampering with the prevalent mechanisms of art presentation and mediation in a rather playful way.The emphasis is on curatorial projects that scrutinize and reconsider the stature of exhibitions as such, also as a creative act that repeatedly provides the audience with new ways of viewing art. LAGE EGAL has set a long-term goal to give artists the opportunity to display their work outside the commercial art market, also as a professional ground for curatorial practice to guest curators. LAGE EGAL also distinguishes itself through its thematic discussions with artist’s books and editions — and accordingly by questioning the original, the copy or reproduction, the duplicate or the series. Even though the designation 'artist-run space' or ‘project space’ as such suggests a local constant, the concept of LAGE EGAL (‘location no matter’) is rather unattached to one specific location. LAGE EGAL is not only a word–play, it also describes exactly the process of a textual and programmatic dynamism and flexibility where the location of the space becomes irrelevant.

River's primary agenda is to function as a progressive platform to promote contemporary art and artists. River operates on a non-traditional, carefully-constructed platform for local and international artists. Its primary shape is a physical gallery with artist-specific programming. River produces solo shows to streamline the artist-gallery working dynamic. This model creates a much-needed space for mentorship in a transparent, honest, and familial incubator-style environment for the artists in the program. The gallery champions artists who exude positive values personally and professionally. As an alternative space, River contributes to the current arts dialogue in Los Angeles as it rapidly evolves. The platform will also support art and culture via alternative, non-commercial programming. Inspired by nature, River will carve out its own path.

Pavillon am Milchhof
The studio collective Milchhof was founded in 1991 in order to secure work spaces for artists. Twenty-eight years later Milchhof’s purpose is still valid and today it’s main function is required more than ever. Since 2004 the Milchhof society founded its home in a former primary school in the borough of Mitte. Milchhof currently comprises forty-three members and many different sub letters, all who are using the over fifty studios contained within the venue.
In 2009 the members erected an on site pavilion by their own means, which is used as a project space that is utilised throughout the whole year by Berlin, national and international artists. An annually alternating jury of Milchhof members design the program that is consciously open to all sorts of genres and formats. In these 10 years over 240 exhibitions, performances, installations, concerts, artist talks, screenings and workshops have taken place in the “Pavillon am Milchhof”. The Pavillon architecture cleverly provides insights from every angle, by day and night; it successfully provides a display window for contemporary art.

Hysterical Narrative Pt. 1 is the first in a series of exhibitions that will examine the various side effects and “off gassing” created by the over saturation of Amero-centric media within the studio practices of five international visual artists and the various coping mechanisms and strategies developed in order to deal with this overload of layered media.

ACUD MACHT NEU The initiative ACUD MACHT NEU operates three spaces at Kunsthaus ACUD: the Club, Studio and Gallery. The aim is to offer room for discourse, exchange and experimental artistic formats. The program is developed by a team of creatives, curators, filmmakers and authors. Fundamentally, the programming is open to submissions. The criteria is their quality and relevance.

RETROSPECTIVE
It’s June 2029. After the initial exchange between TSA LA and HilbertRaum, we’re looking back at 10 years of collaboration and want to honour this occasion with a joint retrospective documenting our past projects and pointing to our future plans. Communication, exchange, networking are guiding concepts of our multimedial reality. But how can a true exchange come about which goes beyond the transportation and exhibiting of finished art objects to a different location? The staged narrative of a joint history of collaboration plays with our sense of what is true and false. It might be the trigger for a real and intense convergence between the two spaces and its protagonists.

Tiger Strikes Asteroid is a network of artist-run spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Each space is independently operated and focuses on presenting a varied program of emerging and mid-career artists. Our goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and build community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities.We seek to further empower the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer; and to act as an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market.

HilbertRaum HilbertRaum is an independent, non-commercial, artist-run project space. It opened in January 2015 in the middle of Reuterkiez in Berlin-Neukölln. Behind HilbertRaum is a group of 18 Berlin-based artists, who take turns curating and organizing two-week exhibitions throughout the entire year. Projects incorporate a broad range of painting, photography, sculpture, video, installation and performance. HilbertRaum is named after the infinitely dimensioned Hilbert space, a concept developed by the mathematician David Hilbert. To us, it represents an open, undetermined and evolving structure of self-organization with the expectation of the unexpected.

Didn’t you know what you were carrying on your back?

The title of the exhibition is borrowed from Goya’s drawing called “Didn’t you know what you were carrying on your back?” which pictures a rotund Dominican friar pleasantly sitting on the back of a peasant working in a field. Each of the artists included is driven to make works that explore the personal and collective baggage that weighs on human existence. The weight of experiences and histories adds depth and meaning to our lives, but – like a fat friar – too much baggage becomes oppression. It is the obsession of these artists to make meaning of this oppression, to express the inexpressible, and to encode what can’t be spoken.
